International Research Programme (Literature)




Who may apply?

Publishers, heads of literary institutions and festivals. The research programme is aimed primarily at applicants who already have contacts in the Danish literary field and are therefore able themselves to arrange meetings and visits to writers, publishers and institutions.

Purpose of the program

The Danish Arts Foundation’s Committee for Literary Project Funding wants to promote literature and the dissemination of Danish literature abroad. Therefore, the committee offers support for giving Danish publishers, agents and literary festival managers the opportunity to gain insight into the international literature and literary scene, and for strengthening networks and dialogues between the Danish and the international literary scene.

Examples of objectives and activities: Danish literary agents, publishers and festival managers travel abroad due to a specific programme in order to gain insight into international literature and hold meetings that contribute to developing networks and dialogues.

Travel that may be expected to be within the publisher’s, agent’s or festival manager’s normal work is not covered.

How your application will be evaluated?

•    The visit must promote and strengthen the international networks of Danish writers, publishers etc. and/or Danish literary institutions
•    The visit must play a decisive role in promoting awareness abroad of Danish writers, publishers etc. and/or Danish literary institutions
•    The visit must promote concrete collaborations between the Danish and international literary scenes

What the application must contain?

For all applicants with a non-Danish account: Fill in the bank information and attach it to your application.

It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that the application is complete and correct. The application will be processed on basis of the information received.

How much you may apply for?

The length of a typical research visit is 2-4 days and the application can be made for maximum two persons. 

Application can be made for grants to cover the direct cost of travel and accommodation. Form of travel and of accommodation must be of standard economy class. A budget for the trip should be attached. Use the budget scheme below


Grants are only awarded to cover these two forms of expenditure and not for general living expenses etc.  Applicants from developing countries can also apply for a subsistence allowance. The definition of a developing country follows the criteria set by the Danish Centre for Culture and Development. 

Once you have submitted the application

You can expect to receive a reply within 4 weeks (except in July, when no reply should be expected).

Accounting and auditing

No later than three months after completion of the project all recipients of grants must confirm that the specified activities have taken place. The rules governing accounting and reporting procedures can be found on our website, http://www.kunst.dk/english/funding/when-awarded-a-grant/

If you get a grant you must...

Payment: The grant will be paid out to the bank account you have specified in your application.

We report the payment to the Danish tax authorities. No tax has been deducted from the amount paid.

Grants up till 100.000 DKK will be paid out as close as possible to the start date specified in the application. If the grant exceeds 100.000 DKK and the project period is longer than 6 months, the grant will be paid out in instalments.

Who will evaluate your application?

The Danish Agency for Culture assesses applications according to the criteria laid down by the Danish Arts Foundation’s Committee for Literary Project Funding.
