Deadline:

  • 15 August
  • 15 February

Who may apply?

Companies, institutions, associations and individuals.

Purpose of the program

The Danish Arts Foundation wants to promote literature and access to foreign literature in Denmark and Danish literature abroad. Therefore, the committee supports projects that promote literature within fiction, general cultural literature and non-fiction.

Applications may be made for support for, for example:

  • Translations to and from Danish
  • Production support for illustrated works
  • Sample translations from Danish
  • Events for authors regarding promotion of their authorship
  • Network support for translators
  • Research travel for translators and publishers
  • Mentor support for translators
  • Other literary projects

Applications for projects for children and young adults must be made to the “Danish and foreign literature for children and young adults” fund.

Applicants who apply for support for more than one project must send an application for each project.

The fund does not support projects within research, education, regional and local history, handbooks, hobby books, self-help books, dictionaries and catalogues, etc.

With regard to network support, the committee offers support to activities in local networks of translators from Danish. The networks must strengthen the access of established translators to knowledge about Danish language and literature, and at the same time, the networks must ensure that there are frameworks for new, promising translators.

How your application will be evaluated?

Applications are assessed on the basis of artistic quality and talent.

Artistic quality

When assessing artistic quality, the committee emphasises professional ability, command of language, originality and the will to explore new themes and expressions, artistic and/or societal relevance, and literary curiosity and courage.

When assessing the quality of translations, the committee puts special emphasis on both the author’s and the translator’s professional foundation, experience and linguistic ability.

Spreading of art support

The committee tries to achieve geographic spreading of the total area of support so that the support is disseminated as widely as possible.

When prioritising between a number of applications that are worthy of support, the committee may choose to prioritise projects and applicants who have not previously received support.

More formal criteria:

  • The project must be clearly described and have clearly consider the target group and the effect of the project.
  • Events are required to be available to the public and be clearly announced.
  • Applications must not be made for support for operation.
  • For support for production or translation of Danish works, it is the publisher that has bought the rights for publishing abroad that can apply for support. Support for translation must only be used for the translator’s fee. The committee gives priority to applications where the translator translates into his or her mother tongue and when the translation is from the language in which the work was originally published.
  • For events intended to promote Danish authors in connection with publishing abroad, reading events or participation in literary festivals, support may be applied for by the author or by the organiser of the event. It is a prerequisite that the participant has been invited by the organiser prior to applying.
  • With regard to mentor support, the translator or publisher may apply for support for no more than ten mentor hours with a qualified translator within the language and genre in question. It is a requirement that a contract has been entered into with the publishing publisher regarding a given translation. A maximum of DKK 6,000 may be applied for.
  • The project must not have been completed at the time of the expiry of the application deadline.
  • For travel when the author is invited to present his or her own works abroad, and when the author has been invited with a short deadline, in exceptional circumstances, support for for travelling expenses (but not accommodation, fees or other expenses) may be applied for afterwards.

How much you may apply for?

You must create a budget for the project. Here, it must clearly indicate which items support is being applied for and how large the self-financing is.

Some self-financing is expected, because the committee very rarely fully finances projects.

The size of the support varies and depends on the concrete project, but support more than DKK 100,000 is rarely given for a project, also based on the consideration that the art support must benefit as many applicants as possible in all parts of the country.

In case of events with one author/translator, a grant of DKK 5,000 is given to subsidise fees. In case of events with more authors/translators, a grant of DKK 4,000 per author/translator is given to subsidise fees.

The committee reserves the right to not allocate the full amount that is applied for, based on the overall priority that art subsidies must be provided to as many people and projects as possible.

Payment: The grant will be paid out to the bank account you have specified in your application.

We report the subsidy to SKAT [the Danish tax authority]. Tax has not been deducted from the amount paid.

Subsidies of DKK 100,000 or less are paid as closely as possible to the date you have stated as the start date in the application. If the subsidy is for more than DKK 100,000 and the project period is more than six months, the amount is paid in instalments.
