Statens Kunstfond

Danish literature abroad and foreign literature in Denmark

You may apply for subsidies from this fund for translations to and from Danish, sample translations, mentor support for translators, events and network support for translators, travel grants for translators and research travel for publishers, etc.

Deadline:

  • 15 August
  • 15 February

Who may apply?

Companies, institutions, associations and individuals.

Purpose of the program

The Danish Arts Foundation wants to promote literature and access to foreign literature in Denmark and Danish literature abroad. Therefore, the committee supports projects that promote literature within fiction, general cultural literature and general non-fiction.

Applications may be made for support for, for example:

  • Translations to and from Danish
  • Production support for especially expensive works and illustrated works
  • Sample translations from Danish
  • Events for authors
  • Network support for translators
  • Research travel for translators and publishers
  • Mentor support for translators
  • Other literary projects

The fund does not support education, regional and local history, handbooks, hobby books, dictionaries and catalogues, etc.

With regard to production support, it is the publishing publisher that may apply for support.

With regard to translations, it is the publishing publisher that may apply for support, and the support must exclusively cover the translator’s fee.

With regard to mentor support, translators may apply for support for no more than ten mentor hours with a qualified translator within the language and genre in question. It is a requirement that a contract has been entered into with the publishing publisher regarding a given translation. A maximum of DKK 6,000 may be applied for.

With regard to network support, the committee offers support to activities in local networks of translators from Danish. The networks must strengthen the access of translators to knowledge about Danish language and literature, and at the same time the networks must ensure that there are frameworks for new, promising translators.

How your application will be evaluated?

Applications are assessed on the basis of artistic quality and talent.

The committee clarifies its position here:

“The concept of ‘artistic quality’ is a basic principle of the Danish Arts Foundation and all of its activities. Directly translated, the Latin word for quality, ‘qualitas’, means ‘what-sort-of-thing-ness’ – or one might say: the quality or state of objective existence or reality of a thing.

What art is about – upon what ‘substance’ it is built and presented – is, of course, not immaterial – and certainly not for the artist himself or herself. He or she must be passionate about it, so that it can blossom and become vivid for the reader. For the Committee for Literary Funding, the relevant content of a work may also play a major role, but ultimately, the ‘what-sort-of-thing-ness’ is crucial for granting support.

Every project – whether it is the publication of a work, a translation, a public event or a literary festival – must be borne by passion and professional ability.

In case of production of Danish and translated works, the committee puts emphasis, in part, on their degree of necessity in both the literary and general cultural public realm, and in part the author’s and translator’s professional foundation and mastery of language.

Finally, a presumption about the work’s good possibilities in the market may mean that the funds should be allocated to other, possibly less commercial, publications.

With regard to applications for holding literary events and festivals, the committee looks at the names of the participants, the topic and the purpose. Originality and inventiveness in the preparation are considered to be positive, while the committee also considers the geographic location and any experience with the interest of the audience.

Support for travel and research can especially be obtained when – for the completion of a project – indispensable knowledge is not available in another way, and when the applicant, through his or her previous authorship or an attached text sample, has documented his or her literary skills.”

Thus, the committee places special emphasis on the following in the application:

  • The project must be clearly described and have clear considerations regarding the target group and the effect of the project.
  • Events are required to be available to the public and be clearly announced.
  • When prioritising between a number of applications that are worthy of support, the committee may choose to prioritise projects and applicants who have not previously received support.
  • The project must not have been completed at the time of the expiry of the application deadline.
  • Applications must not be made for support for operation.

What the application must contain?

We recommend that you become familiar with the application criteria and have the required information and documents/files ready before you start applying.

As an applicant, you may only submit one application per application deadline. You may, on the other hand, apply for support for a number of projects in the same application.

The application must contain

  • A project description
  • A budget with a precise statement about which items support is being applied for using, [Budget form]
  • A CV and biographies of no more than one page per person for whom funds are being applied (artists, authors, translators, presentation holders, project managers, etc.)
  • A contract with the translator in connection with translation support and mentor support
  • Text samples (in the original language and translation) (no more than five pages each)
  • Written agreements, contracts, etc.
  • Permission from the rights holder, plan with the sample translation and pitch, list of choices of publishers including contacts, and the motivation for their selection in connection with support for sample translations
  • For foreign bank accounts, a completed bank information form must be attached. To choose the correct form, use the IBAN Checker.

Please note that we can only receive material in the following formats: PDF, Word, Excel and mp3.

As the applicant, you are responsible for completing the application form correctly, and that all of the attachments wanted are attached. The committee processes the applications on the basis of the material that is submitted with the application in question.

How much you may apply for?

You must create a budget for the project. Here, it must clearly indicate which items support is being applied for and how large the self-financing is.

Some self-financing is expected, because the committee very rarely fully finances projects.

The size of the support varies and depends on the concrete project, but support more than DKK 100,000 is rarely given for a project, also based on the consideration that the art support must benefit as many applicants as possible in all parts of the country.

In case of events with one author/translator, a grant of DKK 5,000 is given to subsidise fees. In case of events with more authors/translators, a grant of DKK 4,000 per author/translator is given to subsidise fees.

The committee reserves the right to not allocate the full amount that is applied for, based on the overall priority that art subsidies must be provided to as many people and projects as possible.

Payment: The grant will be paid out to the bank account you have specified in your application.

We report the subsidy to SKAT [the Danish tax authority]. Tax has not been deducted from the amount paid.

Subsidies of DKK 100,000 or less are paid as closely as possible to the date you have stated as the start date in the application. If the subsidy is for more than DKK 100,000 and the project period is more than six months, the amount is paid in instalments.

When do you get an answer?

When you have submitted your electronic application, you will automatically receive an email acknowledging its receipt with a copy of the application attached.

You will receive notification of the committee's decision no later than 12 weeks after the deadline. During this period, the applications will be prepared for the committee, disseminated, read and processed. When all of the applications with the same deadline are ready, notification of the results will be given to the individual applicants by email.
