Deadline:

  • Application deadlines in 2019: January 15 May 15 and September 16

Who may apply?

Anyone wishing to commission music from Danish artists across the musical field in connection with:

Short- or long-term composer agreements
This may include, for example, Danish or non-Danish orchestras, ensembles, concert organizers, museums, festivals, associations, musicians, projects or institutions wishing to host a concert, an event, a publication or a residency or engage in any other form of binding agreement for either a single work or short- or long-term agreements.

The commissioning party must make an arrangement with the composer, who, in addition to accepting the assignment and the commission, is required to outline the overall artistic concept.

The Committee encourages hosts and commissioning parties to co-fund the composer’s fee. For larger institutions, co-funding of the composer’s fee is mandatory.

If the grant application is approved, the partial fee is paid directly to the composer.

Non-Danish commissioners may also apply.

The composer cannot simultaneously be enrolled as an active student on an educational course eligible for SU, nor be enrolled on a Ph.D.

Names of applicants to the Danish Arts Foundation will be made public on the Danish Arts Foundation’s website, www.kunst.dk.

Purpose of the program

To stimulate the commissioning of new music by Danish composers in furtherance of diversity of expression and musical experience for the benefit of a large audience.

This goal is pursued by co-funding composer fees for new music commissioned by various actors.

How your application will be evaluated?

The general criterion for all grants given by the Danish Arts Foundation is the quality of the artistic production and talent viewed in conjunction with the project outlined in the application.

The Committee for Music Grants applies the following criteria in prioritizing which applications qualify for a grant:

  • music with an independent, personal and original expression
  • music with an ambitious mastery of musical techniques
  • music which explores new modes of expression
  • music which is surprising or holds promise

The Committee further places a priority on artistic activities that

  • articulate and argue their own artistic-compositional quality
  • actively engage with their musical community and relate to the audience and society at large

Moreover, the Committee places a priority on the composer agreement’s use of professional communication, documentation and PR efforts.

In assessing an application, the Committee may take into consideration whether the specific applicant is currently receiving or has previously received grants from the Danish Arts Foundation.

As the Committee’s funds are limited, it cannot fund all qualified applications. The Committee reserves the right to provide smaller grants than the applied amount based on the overall field of applicants, available funds and the desire to ensure diversity among the grant recipients.
