  • 1 February
  • 15 August

* Note: The deadline for application in February has changed. There are two annual deadlines – the subsequent deadline is August 15. We only receive applications electronically.

Who may apply?

Companies, institutions, associations and individuals.

Only publishing (purchasing) publishers or theatres that arrange a performance/publish the work in printed form may apply for subsidies for translation and production support.

Purpose of the program

The Danish Arts Foundation wants to promote literature and access to foreign literature in Denmark and Danish literature abroad. Therefore, the committee supports projects that promote literature within fiction, drama, general cultural literature and general non-fiction.

Applications may be made for support for, for example:

  • Translations to and from Danish
  • Sample translations from Danish
  • Production support for illustrated works
  • Events for authors, illustrators and translators intended to promote their authorship/own work
  • Research travel for translators and publishers (in case of research travel for Danish authors, please see the “Danish literature in Denmark” fund)
  • Network support for translators
  • Mentor support for translators
  • Other literary projects

Projects for children and young adults must be applied for via the “Danish and foreign literature for children and young adults” fund.

Applicants for support for several projects must submit an application for each project.

The fund does not support projects that the committee assesses as being within research, education, regional and local history, handbooks, hobby books, self-help books, dictionaries and catalogues, etc. Support is not usually granted to Danish publishers/theatres that want to publish translated Danish works.

How your application will be evaluated?

Applications are assessed on the basis of artistic quality and talent.

Artistic quality

When assessing artistic quality, the committee emphasises professional ability, command of language, originality and the will to explore new themes and expressions, artistic and/or societal relevance, and literary curiosity and courage.

Quality is not just considered to be artistic quality, but also the quality of the project applied for as a whole.

When assessing the quality of translations, the committee puts special emphasis on both the author’s and the translator’s professional foundation, experience and linguistic ability.

Research travel

In the case of applications for subsidies for research travel, the committee also evaluates the degree to which the travel is required for the project in question, including whether there are alternatives for obtaining the knowledge wanted. For publishers and agencies, the purpose of the research travel is expected to lie outside of the framework for a publisher’s/agency’s ordinary work.

Spreading of art support

The committee tries to achieve geographic spreading of the total area of support so that the support is disseminated as widely as possible.

When prioritising between a number of applications that are worthy of support, the committee may choose not to prioritise projects and applicants who have previously received support. If there are several applications from the same applicant, the committee reserves the right to prioritise between the applications.

With regard to the volume of applications, works are prioritised if the committee’s assessment is that they would have great difficulty getting by in market conditions.

More formal criteria:

  • The project must be clearly described.
  • For support for production or translation of foreign works, it is the publisher that has bought the rights for publishing in Denmark that may apply for support. In addition, support for translation must only be used for the translator’s fee. The committee gives priority to applications where the translator translates into his or her mother tongue and when the translation is from the language in which the work was originally published.
  • The project must not have been completed at the time of the expiry of the application deadline. For travel when the author is invited to present his or her own works abroad, and when the author has been invited with a short deadline, in exceptional circumstances, support for travelling expenses may be applied for afterwards.
  • For events intended to promote foreign authors, illustrators or translators in connection with publishing, reading events or participation in literary festivals in Denmark, support may be applied for by the author or by the organiser of the event. It is a prerequisite that the participant has been invited by the organiser prior to applying. The same rules apply to Danish authors, illustrators and translators who are invited to promote their authorship/work abroad. Promotional events are required to be available to the public and be clearly announced.
  • For a sample translation of up to 10 pages, a subsidy of DKK 4,000 may be applied for and for a sample translation of up to 25 pages, a subsidy of DKK 8,000 may be applied for. If a subsidy for a sample translation of up to 25 pages is applied for, special justification must be given for doing so.
  • With regard to mentor support, the translator or publisher may apply for support for no more than ten mentor hours with a qualified translator within the language and genre in question. It is a requirement that a contract has been entered into with the publishing publisher regarding a given translation. A maximum of DKK 6,000 may be applied for.
  • With regard to network support, the committee offers support to activities in local networks of translators from Danish. The networks must strengthen the access of established translators to knowledge about Danish language and literature, and at the same time the networks must ensure that there are frameworks for new, promising translators.
  • Applications must not be made for support for operation.

How much you may apply for?

You must create a budget for the project. Here, it must clearly indicate which items support is being applied for and how large the self-financing is.

Some self-financing is expected, because the committee very rarely fully finances projects.

The size of the support varies and depends on the concrete project, but support more than DKK 100,000 is rarely given for a project, also based on the consideration that the art support must benefit as many applicants as possible in all parts of the country.

The committee reserves the right to not allocate the full amount that is applied for, based on the overall priority that art subsidies must be provided to as many people and projects as possible.

Payment: The grant will be paid out to the bank account you have specified in your application.

We report the subsidy to SKAT [the Danish tax authority]. Tax has not been deducted from the amount paid.

Subsidies of DKK 100,000 or less are paid as closely as possible to the date you have stated as the start date in the application. If the subsidy is for more than DKK 100,000 and the project period is more than six months, the amount is paid in instalments.

When do you get an answer?

You will receive notification of the committee's decision no later than 8 weeks after the deadline. During this period, the applications will be prepared for the committee, disseminated, read and processed. When all of the applications with the same deadline are ready, notification of the results will be given to the individual applicants by email.

Once you have submitted the application

When you have submitted the application form, you will receive a receipt by email with a copy of the application attached. Check the receipt to ensure that all of the attachments wanted are included.
